Building the Future of Defence Industry in the Hunter

The future of Australia’s defence industry depends on a skilled, homegrown workforce—and that future starts now.

In mid-February, The Hon. Pat Conroy, Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, announced the launch of the 2025/2026 Schools Pathways Program, reinforcing the critical role STEM education plays in building Australia’s sovereign capability.

As part of this initiative, RDA Hunter’s ME Program is inviting Hunter-based defence and advanced manufacturing businesses to engage directly with high school students through hands-on STEM activities across the region. With over 44 activities available, a standout opportunity is the Defence Industry Technology Expo on July 29–30, 2025, at the Murrook Cultural Centre. This event brings together over 600 Year 9–12 students and their teachers for an immersive experience, connecting them with real-world defence industry careers.

Why Should Defence Industry Get Involved?

The defence sector is experiencing rapid growth, with increasing demand for skilled professionals in engineering, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, and logistics. By participating in this program, industry leaders can:

  • Engage with the next generation of STEM talent – Spark curiosity and inspire students to pursue careers in defence and advanced manufacturing.
  • Showcase pathways into the sector – Help students and educators understand the critical skills required and career opportunities available.
  • Develop long-term talent pipelines – Build relationships with students and schools to foster a future-ready workforce.

What’s in It for Businesses?

A free exhibition stall at the Defence Industry Technology Expo, along with catering and exposure to over 600 students and educators from across the Hunter.

This initiative isn’t just about inspiring students—it’s about securing the future of our industry. As one past participant noted:

“Being able to address students directly, and not have them breeze past, picking up a pamphlet, was a great opportunity.” – Defence Industry Representative
