Access to a skilled, security-cleared workforce remains one of the most persistent challenges facing Australia’s defence, national security and public sector industries.
To help address this challenge locally, the University of Newcastle is inviting defence and national security employers to participate in its Demystifying Security Clearances initiative. This program is designed to remove barriers for high-potential students entering security-sensitive roles.
Security clearance processing times, which can range from six weeks to six months, often prevent students from participating in short-term placements, internships and cadetships. In response, the University has taken the proactive step of acting as a clearance sponsor for a small cohort of rigorously selected students who have demonstrated strong alignment with defence, national security and public sector career pathways.
Opportunity for Hunter Defence industry members
Hunter Defence members are invited to review a current pool of University of Newcastle students and consider sponsoring one or more candidates for security clearance at a level appropriate to their organisation.
Industry sponsorship provides:
- Early access to a vetted pool of motivated, high-potential students
- A streamlined pathway into placements, internships or early-career roles
- The ability to transfer an existing clearance if paid employment is offered
- A practical contribution to strengthening Australia’s sovereign workforce capability
Students have been selected through a competitive process and represent disciplines relevant to defence and national security needs, including computer science, engineering and related technical fields.
Flexible sponsorship model
The University offers a tiered sponsorship model, allowing organisations to participate at a level that suits their workforce planning and capacity. Options range from smaller sponsorship commitments through to larger intakes supporting multiple students, with all clearances managed through a coordinated university-led process .
Next steps
Hunter Defence encourages member organisations to review this opportunity and consider how student sponsorship could support both immediate workforce needs and longer-term capability development.
Organisations interested in learning more, reviewing candidate summaries, or discussing sponsorship options are encouraged to make contact via the University of Newcastle.
